Find out how many betting apps like Dream 11 have been shut down

It is impossible to provide an exact number of betting apps that have been shut down as government crackdowns are ongoing and target hundreds of illegal platforms. Following India’s new law banning real-money online gaming in August 2025, major platforms like Dream11, MPL, Zupee, and My11Circle have also had to suspend their cash game offerings.

Government crackdowns and illegal apps

Over the past few years, the government has taken significant action against numerous illegal offshore betting and gambling sites.

December 2023: The government blocked 174 betting and gambling apps, including well-known platforms like Parimach, Dafabet, Betway, and links to the Mahadev app.

Early 2025: Five more apps—Vinoura, Winstler42, Casinohorms, Amunra1 and Polymarket—Dream 11 banned for promoting gambling.

2022 to June 2025: A report from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) confirmed that 1,524 illegal gambling and betting websites and apps were blocked during the period.

Ongoing battles: Many blocked platforms quickly reappear under new names or via mirror websites, leading to a constant “whack-a-mole” problem for authorities.

Online Gaming Bill, 2025

This new law represents the most significant crackdown on the real-money gaming industry to date, also affecting popular fantasy and skill-based platforms.

Nationwide ban: The bill, passed by Parliament in August 2025, imposes a complete ban on all online games involving financial transactions, whether based on skill or chance.

Impact on top platforms: In response to the new law, leading companies immediately suspended their real-money games:

The legal distinction is now irrelevant.

The new federal law removes a key distinction that previously allowed fantasy apps like Dream11 to operate. While past court rulings have upheld fantasy sports as “games of skill,” the Online Gaming Bill, 2025, no longer makes this distinction when money is involved, effectively banning all cash competitions.
