Seven people were killed in a horrific crash involving a passenger van near Yellowstone National Park, US police said on Friday, and officials investigating the accident said a pickup truck struck a van carrying 14 people in eastern Idaho near Henrys Lake on Thursday evening.

Tragically, the six people in the van and the driver of the pickup died as a result of the crash, Idaho State Police said in a statement Friday. Photos in local media showed a badly damaged red truck and a van engulfed in flames.
Police said an air ambulance was called to take the victims to hospital due to the severity of their injuries. There is no information on the identities or nationalities of those trapped in the accident.
Us News : According to reports by the police, the crash occurred on May 1, 2025 around 7:15PM on US Highway 20 which is close to Henry’s Lake State Park. The state park is located around 16 miles (26 kilometers) west of Yellowstone National Park.
No concrete reasons have been given by the police for the cause of the wreck, however, it is noted that a Dodge Ram Truck was heading south while a Mercedes Van was heading towards the opposite direction when the collision took place. The conditions were clear at the time of the incident according to the video taken at the scene.
From the police report, it is clear that both vehicles were engulfed in flames. The passenger of the pickup truck who was later identified as 25 year old Isaih Moreno from Humble Texas died along with six occupants of the Mercedes van. Police have said it will take some time to identify the rest of the victims however I will claim this much.
While stating the victim count, Fremont County’s coroner Brenda Dye informed New York Times that the six remaining were not identifiable and hence she is awaiting DNA testing to confirm. Additionally she speculated that the six were indeed foreigners, two from Italy and the rest from unknown countries.
The van was carrying a tour group of 14 people, and the surviving occupants were taken to hospitals with injuries, police spokesperson Aaron Snell said.
Two were flown to an Idaho Falls hospital and one was flown to a Bozeman, Montana, hospital, according to police. Their conditions were not released. The others were taken to area hospitals with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening, police said.
The crash remains under investigation.
US News: Horrible van accident in Yellowstone, America, seven people died Roger Merrill (60) was driving home when he saw flames engulfing the two vehicles as bystanders tried to care for survivors from the van on the side of the highway. Merrill said he often sees tourist vans on the highway.
“It is a very dangerous highway because it leads to the main entrance of Yellowstone National Park,” he said. “It’s extremely busy.”
Merrill captured video of the wreckage with smoke blanketing the van. Due to the remote location, Merrill said he anxiously awaited the help of first responders.
“It took an unnervingly long time for help to arrive just because of the location,” he said.
A Fremont County sheriff’s deputy showed up shortly after the crash, and with the help of passers-by, was able to save the injured occupants of a van that burst into flames, police said Friday (May 2, 2025).
The state has been working with local leaders to get “answers on what led up to this terrible tragedy, ” Idaho Gov. Brad Little said Sunday in a social media statement.
Idaho Transportation’s safety efforts to reduce injuries and deaths on the highway were already in the research and planning stages, but Gov. Phil Roberts said last year that the highway project is being decided now. At the time, an average of about 10, 500 vehicles used that portion of Interstate 50 daily, the agency said.
